The NIHSS hosted its Annual Catalytic Research Symposium on the 7th of March 2017. This engaging forum is the NIHSS’ platform that brings together researchers to meet fellow Catalytic Research Project researchers and showcase their work. The symposium provided a platform for researchers to explore ideas about new theories and methodologies that are emerging in their fields. The attendees shared highlights in their research journeys which include books, journal articles, theatre productions, art exhibitions, conferences, workshops and the successful completion of post graduate students. 

In attendance were projects which have been part of the NIHSS’ Flagship Catalytic research programme from the inception of the institute as well as project with partial (Seed) funding.

The NIHSS has funded 39 research projects to date. These projects are in the fields of the Arts (Music, Performing and Visual arts,) African studies, Anthropology, Criminology Education, History, International Relations, Indigenous knowledge systems, Languages, Literature Psychology and Sociology as well as Trans – Disciplinary projects. The programme supports researchers at the Universities of Cape Town, Free State, Limpopo, Johannesburg, South Africa, Pretoria, Stellenbosch, Western Cape, Witwatersrand Durban University of Technology as well as the Durban University of Technology and Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University.
