Composer’s National Collegium

Composer’s National Collegium

The composing community in the tertiary education sector is geographically dispersed throughout South Africa with large distances separating the various groups of composers in academia – at times these creators of new music display very diverse approaches, philosophies and ideologies towards the composing of new music. The Composer’s National Collegium create new opportunities by bringing together composers who are dedicated to the advancement of music in South Africa in a unified and reconciliatory way.

From the 3rd to the 10th of June 2017, with the support of the NIHSS, the CNC hosted a series of workshop and concerts at the Universities of Cape Town, Pretoria and Witwatersrand. The conference sought to elevate the art of original composition in South Africa and to advance the competencies and opportunities of composers nationally – both at a university student level as well as at the professional-academic level. The success of these works presented in concert by young composers to their peers and to the general public has encouraged students who want to further their postgraduate studies towards a PhD in composition
