2017/18 Call for Proposals: Professional Association & Working Groups

The National Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIHSS) invites South African academics based in South African public universities in the faculties of Humanities and Social Sciences as well as research institutes to submit research proposals. 2017/18 Calls for funding for the Working Groups Programme and the Professional Associations Programme are open-ended ending 30 November 2017.

WORKING GROUPS AND PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATIONS PROGRAMMES

The Working Groups and Professional Association Programmes are intended to meet the Institute’s Strategic objective 2 “to promote the integrity, reputation and recognition of the humanities and social sciences within the higher education community, the science and technology community, and society.”

The following disciplines have been identified as belonging to the broad category of the Humanities and Social Sciences, namely Anthropology; Archaeology; Archival Sciences; Communication; Criminology; Cultural Studies; Development Studies; Economics; Education; Ethics; Geography; History; Languages; Law; Linguistics; Literature; Music; Philosophy; Political Science; Psychology; Religion and Comparative Religion; Sociology; Women's Studies; Social Work, Health Studies. The NIHSS also welcomes Comparative BRICS related research in the areas of Sustainable Development and Quality of Life; Education; Health; Economic Growth and Development; Peace and Security; Social Justice; Political and Economic Governance; and Knowledge and Innovation.

The NIHSS will fund the following academic activities:

  • Research outputs in the form of books, journals and creative outputs
  • Opportunities for international collaborations within Africa and the BRICS
  • Conferences / Annual General Meetings
  • Workshops / Seminars / Dialogues

ELIGIBILITY:

  • All grant funding requests must be in the disciplines represented by the Humanities and Social Sciences.
  • All grant funding requests should be endorsed by relevant institutions as outlined below

i. Working Groups:

Applicants to the Working Groups Programme must be researchers and academics based in South African public universities in the faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Proposals must be endorsed by the Dean of the Faculty of the Humanities and Social Sciences.

APPLICANTS MUST PROVIDE THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTS AS PART OF THEIR APPLICATION:

  1. A full research proposal  with detailed budgets (with projected income and expenditure)
  2. A motivation letter (not longer than 500 words).
  3. Full curriculum vitae of the applicant (principal researcher, team members details to be included in CV; )
  4. Letter of endorsement of institution (s), where the research project will be based (relevant Dean/s)
  5. Copy of ID / Passport of applicant

ii. Professional Associations

Applicants to the Professional Associations programme must be in the disciplines represented by the Humanities and Social Sciences, have a formal structure with office bearers and hosted at least one conference

APPLICANTS MUST PROVIDE THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTS AS PART OF THEIR APPLICATION:

  1. A motivation letter (not longer than 500 words) with authorised signature/s
  2. Full proposal with budget (projected income and expenditure)
  3. Constitution of the Professional Association.
  4. Copy of ID / Passport of applicant

  • There is no deadline for the submission of applications. Only complete applications will be considered.
