The National Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIHSS) joins the higher education sector in congratulating Prof Mogomme Alpheus Masoga on his appointment as Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Teaching and Learning at the Central University of Technology (CUT), effective 1 August 2026.

Prof Masoga’s appointment reflects his longstanding contribution to scholarship, academic leadership, institutional transformation, and the advancement of the humanities and social sciences within South Africa and beyond.

A distinguished scholar and National Research Foundation (NRF)-rated researcher, Prof Masoga has built an extensive academic and leadership career spanning higher education institutions, research bodies, and national knowledge platforms. His work across the fields of oral history, Africanism, Indigenous Knowledge Systems, curriculum transformation, and higher education development continues to contribute meaningfully to scholarly and policy discourse both nationally and internationally.

Within the NIHSS and South African BRICS Think Tank (SABTT) environment, Prof Masoga currently serves as Chairperson of the NIHSS Board and Chairperson of the South African BRICS Think Tank (SABTT), where he contributes strategic leadership in advancing the role and positioning of the humanities and social sciences within broader national, continental, and global academic engagements.

Throughout his career, Prof Masoga has held several senior academic and leadership positions, including serving as Dean of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of the Free State (UFS), Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Zululand (UNIZULU), and Research Professor at both the University of Limpopo (UL) and the University of Venda (UNIVEN). His contributions further extend to national research development, Indigenous Knowledge Systems advocacy, higher education transformation initiatives, and academic publishing.

The NIHSS acknowledges and celebrates Prof Masoga’s continued commitment to academic excellence, African-centred scholarship, institutional leadership, and the transformation of higher education in South Africa.
