The 'virtual doctoral schools’ mentors converged on 20-21 April 2017 at the NIHSS to discuss and consolidate their 2017 plans. The mentors’ strategic annual workshop saw at least 17 mentors from all six doctoral schools, namely; Western Cape, Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, Free State and University of South Africa, Northern Corridor School gathered under one roof to exchange ideas.
What is the NMP?
The NMP is constituted from a partnership between NIHSS, the South African Humanities Deans Association (SAHUDA) and Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA). It aims to provide high quality academic mentoring to all NIHSS doctoral students through targeted interventions offering a communal based approach to doctoral support.
Mentors are broadly tasked with coordinating our virtual doctoral schools and providing mentorship and development to NIHSS funded students. Not only are they key in facilitating the development of relevant research skills and encouraging cross-institutional as well as interdisciplinary conversations among doctoral students; their contribution plays a significant role in providing enhanced doctoral support within an increasingly strained postgraduate system.
