APPOINTMENT OF CHAIRPERSON OF THE AUDIT AND RISK COMMITTEE: MR TUMELO MOKOENA
The Board of the National Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIHSS) is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Tumelo Mokoena as Chairperson of the Audit and Risk Committee of the Institute, effective 1 April 2026.
Mr Mokoena is a qualified Chartered Accountant and accredited member of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA), with over 17 years of professional experience in auditing, financial management, accounting, supply chain management, and corporate governance. Over 12 years of this experience has been at senior management level, including roles as Chief Financial Officer and Acting Chief Executive Officer.
Mr Mokoena currently serves as Chief Financial Officer of the South African Nursing Council (SANC), where he leads the Finance and Supply Chain Management divisions and provides strategic financial oversight to the Council and its committees.
Mr Mokoena has an established history with the National Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences, having previously served as Chief Financial Officer from December 2017 to May 2024, and earlier as Acting Chief Financial Officer between 2016 and 2017. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in strengthening the Institute’s financial management systems, governance structures and reporting processes.
In addition, he served as Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Institute from February to October 2023, providing strategic leadership to the organisation and working closely with the Board and stakeholders to advance the Institute’s mandate within the Humanities and Social Sciences sector.
Mr Mokoena holds a BCom (Accounting) degree and BCom Honours in Accounting from the University of Johannesburg andhas successfully completed both SAICA professional qualifying examinations. He is currently further strengthening his governance and legal expertise through the pursuit of a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree at the University of South Africa (UNISA).
Commenting on the appointment, Professor Mogomme Masoga, Chairperson of the NIHSS Board, stated:
“The Board is delighted to welcome Mr Tumelo Mokoena as Chairperson of the Audit and Risk Committee. His extensive experience in public sector financial management, governance oversight, and risk management, together with his deep institutional knowledge of the Institute, will significantly strengthen the work of the Committee and support the Board in ensuring sound financial stewardship and accountability within the NIHSS.”
The Board is confident that Mr Mokoena’s leadership and expertise will further strengthen the Institute’s governance framework, enhance financial oversight and risk management.
